The mechanical engineering program at the University of Utah was recently ranked in the range 35-40 in the nation and in the range 101-150 in the world, according to the mechanical engineering subject area in the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) from ShanghaiRanking.
To be included in a subject ranking, a university is required to have a minimum number of research publications during the period of 2011-2015. Categories used in the assessment include the number of journal publications, citations, publications with international collaborators, publications that appear in top journals, and faculty members who have won prestigious international awards. A program’s score in a category is determined by normalizing the data with the top score in the category. A weighting factor is applied to each category and the final score is the sum of the normalized category scores.
“For a faculty that is undergoing a major transition, I am very pleased to see that all of the efforts of our young faculty are being recognized on a national and world stage,” said Professor Tim Ameel, mechanical engineering department chair. “It is a testament to our outstanding faculty and the quality of our graduate students, combined with impactful, cutting-edge research that has resulted in this department achievement”
ARWU is the oldest global ranking system for universities, having been founded in 2003. It is highly regarded due to its transparent and consistent methodology.
